Zen and the Art of Medical Image Registration: Correspondence, Homology and Quality.

W.R. Crum, L.D.Griffin, D.L.G.Hill and D.J.Hawkes.

All of the difficulties associated with obtaining reliable results from non-rigid registration algorithms are discussed here. The fundamental warning is that we cannot expect to be able to make quantitative use of any result which is not accompanied by an assessment of associated estimation error. This paper is well worth reading.

Similar observations (and opinions) within our own group motivated theoretical work which investigated the estimation of error for Mutual Information Based registration algorithms.
